Urgent action needed on Long Covid and Clinic Closures: letter to Ashley Dalton MP

Long Covid SOS

Today Long Covid SOS has sent a letter to Under-Secretary of State for Public Health Ashley Dalton, urging the government to “recognise the urgent need to prioritise the millions affected by Long Covid” as the condition continues to affect lives, add to the pressures on the NHS and impacts the economy.

Long Covid SOS is also calling on the government to take immediate action as Long Covid clinics across the UK face closure, leaving thousands of patients without access to vital care. We are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further clinic closures and ensure sustained support for those affected.

With an estimated two million people in the UK living with Long Covid, the condition continues to devastate lives, overwhelm healthcare services, and place significant strain on the economy. Despite this, access to specialist care remains inconsistent, and many patients feel abandoned as public awareness wanes and government action stalls.

“We hear from people every day who are struggling with the long-term effects of Long Covid, and for many, specialist clinics were their only hope. Their closure is not just devastating for individuals—it also increases the burden on already overstretched GPs and NHS services, Dr Lucy Moore, Chair of Trustees of Long Covid SOS

As a core participant in the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, Long Covid SOS has been at the forefront of advocating for people with Long Covid, highlighting the lack of public awareness, the failure to account for Long Covid risks, and the urgent need for greater research and healthcare funding.

To address this crisis, Long Covid SOS is calling for the government to adopt its Long Covid Bill of Rights, which outlines the fundamental rights that every person with Long Covid should be guaranteed:

  • The RIGHT to be believed

  • The RIGHT to a diagnosis

  • The RIGHT to support

  • The RIGHT to safe healthcare

  • The RIGHT to funded research

The economic impact of Long Covid is also growing, with thousands unable to work due to debilitating symptoms. This is reducing workforce participation and productivity, increasing pressure on welfare systems, and adding to the financial burden on individuals and families. Without adequate support and investment in research, Long Covid could continue to hinder the UK’s economic recovery.

Long Covid SOS has provided policymakers with a Long Covid Factsheet, outlining the latest evidence and key policy recommendations to improve care, research, and support.

“Too many people with Long Covid are being left to fend for themselves. We need a clear, long-term commitment from the government to provide care, fund research, and ensure those affected get the help they need, Dr Lucy Moore, Chair of Trustees of Long Covid SOS

We are calling for an urgent meeting with Ashley Dalton as the Minister for Public Health and Prevention to discuss how the government can work with the Long Covid community to deliver meaningful change.
